Guides

Your domain, your account.

I don’t sell domains, and I won’t hold yours. You register it, in your name or your group’s, at a registrar you control. If you ever leave me, it comes with you and there’s nothing to release.

That means one extra job at the start. Here’s how to do it — and if you’d rather do it together on a call, just ask.

1. Register the domain

Two I recommend. Both are fine; pick either.

Porkbun

Cheap, clear, WHOIS privacy included, handles most endings including .uk.

Cloudflare Registrar

Sold at cost, no markup. Fewer endings available — check yours is supported before you commit.

  • 1.Create the account and turn on two-factor authentication.
  • 2.Register the name in your own name or your group’s — not mine, not a member’s personal one if the group owns it.
  • 3.Set it to auto-renew, and make sure the card on file is one that will still be valid next year.

2. Point it at your hosting

Once your account is set up I’ll send you an IP address and nameservers. Two ways to use them — either is fine.

A. Use my nameservers (simplest)

At your registrar, replace the nameservers with the two I send you. Everything DNS then happens in your cPanel, and I can fix things for you.

B. Keep Cloudflare (if you already use it)

Leave your nameservers alone and just add an A record for the bare domain and one for www, both pointing at the IP I give you. If you proxy through Cloudflare, set SSL mode to Full (strict) once your certificate is issued — not Flexible, which causes redirect loops.

DNS changes usually take minutes, occasionally a few hours. If nothing happens after that, it’s almost always a record in the wrong place — send me a screenshot.

3. If you ever leave

Your domain is already yours, so there’s nothing for me to hand over. Point it wherever you like. For most endings you’ll need an auth or EPP code from your registrar to move the registration itself; for .uk it’s a tag change instead, not a code. I’ll also give you a full backup of your site and email.

What I won’t do

Buy your domain for you, pay its renewal, hold the login, or appear as the registrant. Not because I’m unhelpful — because when a host owns your domain, leaving them stops being your decision.
